A skin fade is one of the sharpest looks a barber can give you, and also one of the quickest to lose its edge. Because the hair is taken right down to the skin at the bottom, even a few days of growth softens that clean gradient.
The short answer: every two weeks
For most people a skin fade looks its best for around ten to fourteen days. After that the faded section fills in, the contrast that made it look crisp starts to disappear, and the whole cut reads a little heavier than it did in the chair.
What changes the timing
No two heads grow at the same speed, so treat two weeks as a starting point, not a rule. A few things push it either way:
- How fast your hair grows. Faster growth means a shorter fresh window.
- How tight the fade is. A zero or bald fade shows growth sooner than a number one or two.
- Your hair type. Thick or dark hair shows the grow out faster than fine or light hair.
- How sharp you like it. If you want it looking brand new at all times, lean toward every ten days.
Stretching the time between visits
If you cannot get in every fortnight, a few small moves keep things tidy for longer. Ask your barber to set the lower section a touch longer so the grow out is less obvious. Keep the length on top neat with a wash and a little product. When the sides start to go, a quick line up buys you another week before a full fade.
